Vipul Arora

Vipul was introduced and nourished on the Kirtan path by his Grandfather (a bhajan singer), Uncle (a kirtaneer), and his college friends.

His perspectives on kirtans transformed when he met kirtaneers in the UK. He saw kirtan in its true essence, ripped off of all denominational identities and belief sets.

Another hit came because of Abdallah, a pianist from Nigeria who was immediately attracted to Kirtan while Vipul and his friends were performing at Copley Square, Boston.

Vipul Arora is Professor at IIT Kanpur, where his core research is on audio processing and how we can transform this world through Music and AI. He is also working with teachers to develop efficient learning methods.

Vipul combined kirtan with pedagogy to give shape to MusicYoga. He taught this to students at IIT Kanpur, who benefitted greatly from MusicYoga.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yoga means to connect with our real self. It entails knowing our real self, acting for our real self-interest and investing in our real self. Music Yoga is an excellent way to re-discover our sacred space, where we happily reside. Music Yoga engages all our senses, not just the mind. We sing melodiously, we play instruments, we clap, and even dance -- with the primary meditation on sound. We take the help of a mantra -- which rescues (tra) our mind (man) from everything undesirable and places it in its natural position.

  • By practicing Music Yoga, you will grow internally because you connect with your real self. This growth will be reflected in all aspects of your life, be it professional or personal. You will develop equanimity, compassion and satisfaction in life. You will be empowered to add value and bring joy to others' lives too. And of course, you will learn basic music.

  • Just an open heart and your voice and/or instruments. You don't need music knowledge or any other background.

  • No. It is an ancient practice. Music has been promoted by various spiritual teachers in different forms throughout history. We follow the process practiced by Sri Chaitanya. Some of the exercises are inspired from modern psychological studies.

    • Anyone can practice it irrespective of their faith and background. We do not bar anyone.
    • Anyone can practice it to the extent they want - from a few seconds to many hours a day. We don't judge anyone.
    • Anyone can choose to quit at any time. We don't hold anyone.
    • Anyone can be happy/spiritual without practising music yoga, just like one can be a sportsperson even without playing basketball. We don't assume monopoly.
